Picture Book Review: LUNA'S GREEN PET
Written by Kirsten Pendreigh and illustrated by Carmen Mok
LUNA’S GREEN PET is a sweet story about a child who really wants a pet but lives in an apartment where pets are not allowed. Not even fish!
Luna finds a plant that has been discarded and decides to adopt it as her new green friend that she takes care of and treats just like a pet.
It’s so lovely when Luna looks after her new pet by replanting it, giving it fresh soil, and water, and then it starts to thrive. Luna even reads a bedtime story to her green friend and takes it for a walk – adorable.
There’s even backmatter with tips and advice for kids wanting their own green pet. I love that this story is so sweet but also that it includes practical advice.
Interestingly, I recently read an article (though I can’t remember where!) about how plants thrive more when they are spoken to nicely as opposed to being yelled at (who even yells at their plants?!). After having also recently read about how trees communicate with one another, I am a little freaked out, but ready to dash out and water and speak kindly to a plant in my room that’s starting to droop a little. I’m so sorry my little green friend!
