Thank you so much, Melissa-Jane! I was very happy to see I did not embarrass myself after all! Looking forward to reading the rest of the artists who you interview for your series. Making art is definitely an activity that thrives on solitude, but coming out of my burrow every once in a while and hearing from other artists is crucial, to my mental health as well as chatting about what kind of pencils they like!

You most certainly did not embarrass yourself! You've given others so much to take away from your experiences, and chatting pencils is a wonderful way to be social 😁 (P.S. What are your fave pencils? 👀)

I love "pencil talk!" For basic sketching like doing the rough drafts of the panda 'toons, I use the tried and true #2 yellow pencils, like you can find at stationary stores. I just tried my first box of BlackWing pencils which are nice for looser drawing, but too soft for my comics rough drafts. I tend to like medium soft to soft pencils. I will use anything, and so if I go to an art supply store I'll buy an assortment of pencils just to see howe I like them. For colored pencils, I am a ride or die Prismacolor fan. I learned this great technique at an illustrator's retreat, from Kelly Murphy, where you spray between layers of water media, and I found that doing that gave the surface more tooth, so I could add more layers of pencil as well as water media.

Ooh this is such great pencil info!!! I tend to just use a Faber-Castell or Staedtler HB for sketching and that’s about it. For colour I’ve been using Caran d’Ache luminance with a mix of cheaper ones I find lying around just because 😆

I've used both of those too. I sometimes use really hard pencils, like a 6 H on very smooth Ampersand Clay Board panels and draw with them like a silverpoint drawing (which I've also done). I really love drawing, once I've got it plotted out in light outlines. I can sit and make tiny marks for hours.
